Metal Roofing vs. Asphalt Shingles: What Works Best in Kitsap County
You need a new roof and you are stuck between two options. Asphalt shingles are the standard. Metal roofing is getting more popular. Both work in the Pacific Northwest, but they perform differently in the rain, wind, and moss conditions that Kitsap County throws at every rooftop. Here is how they compare so you can make the right call for your home.
Cost Comparison
Asphalt shingles cost less upfront. For a standard single-family home in Silverdale or Bremerton, an asphalt shingle roof typically runs $10,000 to $18,000 installed as of 2026. Architectural shingles (the most common choice here) sit at the higher end of that range.
A metal roof costs more. Standing seam metal roofing for the same home runs about $18,000 to $32,000 installed. Metal shingle or metal shake profiles fall somewhere in between. These are general ranges for our area, and your real number comes from a free on-site estimate.
The upfront cost difference is significant. But metal lasts two to three times longer. When you divide the cost by the years of life you get, metal often comes out cheaper per year.
Lifespan
Asphalt shingles in Kitsap County last 20 to 30 years. The constant rain, the mild but wet winters, and the moss pressure shorten the lifespan compared to drier climates. A roof that might last 30 years in a dry desert climate may only last 22 here.
Metal roofs last 40 to 60 years in the Pacific Northwest. They do not rot, they do not absorb water, and moss has a much harder time getting a grip on the smooth surface. Some metal roofs installed in the 1960s and 1970s are still performing today.
If you plan to stay in your home long-term, metal gives you a roof you may never have to replace again.
Performance in Rain
Kitsap County gets over 50 inches of rain per year. Water management is the most important job your roof does.
Asphalt shingles shed rain well when they are in good condition. But each shingle is a separate piece with a seam that water can work under if the seal fails. Wind-driven rain, which is common during fall and winter storms coming in off the Puget Sound, can push water sideways under shingle tabs.
Metal roofing has fewer seams. Standing seam panels run vertically from the ridge to the eave with raised seams that lock together. Water runs straight down with almost no chance of penetration. For homes exposed to wind off the water in Poulsbo, Port Orchard, and along Dyes Inlet, this is a meaningful advantage.
Moss and Algae
This is where metal really wins in Kitsap County. Moss loves asphalt shingles. The rough, porous surface holds moisture and gives moss roots something to grab. Once moss establishes itself, it lifts shingle edges and traps even more water. Homes surrounded by Douglas fir and Western red cedar (which describes most of Silverdale, Kingston, and Bainbridge Island) fight moss constantly.
Metal roofing is smooth and nonporous. Moss spores land on it but cannot take hold the same way. Some moss may grow in the seams over many years, but it is far less aggressive than on asphalt. You will spend less time and money on moss treatment with a metal roof.
Wind Resistance
Kitsap County gets strong windstorms, especially in fall and winter when systems blow in from the Pacific. Asphalt shingles are rated for wind, but individual tabs can lift and tear in high winds. Once one shingle lifts, the wind gets under the next one, and you can lose a section of roof in a single storm.
Quality metal roofing panels are rated for winds of 120 mph or more. The interlocking seam design resists uplift better than individual shingles. After a major windstorm, metal roofs typically need zero repairs while asphalt shingle roofs often need patching.
Noise
One concern homeowners have about metal roofing is noise. Will it be loud when it rains? In the Pacific Northwest, where rain is a daily reality for months, this matters.
The answer depends on the installation. Metal roofing installed directly over open rafters without insulation can be louder. But metal installed over solid decking with proper underlayment is not noticeably louder than asphalt. Modern installations include a synthetic underlayment layer that dampens sound. If your home has attic insulation (and it should, given Kitsap County winters), rain noise is a non-issue.
We also offer attic insulation services that improve both energy efficiency and sound dampening.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose asphalt if:
- Budget is your primary concern
- You plan to sell the home within 10 years
- You want the widest range of color and style options
Choose metal if:
- You want a roof that lasts 40 to 60 years
- You are tired of fighting moss
- You want the best performance in rain and wind
- You plan to stay in your home long-term
Either way, quality installation matters more than material choice. A poorly installed metal roof will leak. A perfectly installed asphalt roof will protect your home for decades.
